Jackets and Salopettes for skiing
1. Ski Jacket and Salopettes (ski trousers)
These are a must to keep you warm and dry on the piste as you will end up falling over at some point or in the middle of a snow shower.
A Ski Jacket and Salopettes (Ski Trousers) need to be
· Windproof- a cold biting wind could make skiing very uncomfortable
· Waterproof- Snow is water after all! You want to stay dry if caught in a snow storm.
· Breathable- You can get very warm while skiing and therefore your ski jacket and salopettes need to be able to dissipate heat.
You don't have to spend the earth on these if you are going skiing for the first time. In the UK TK Maxx and Decathlon are great options for value Ski clothing. You'll also see lots of British people on the slopes in Dare2b clothing which is also great value.
- Ski Jacket
- Salopettes
Throughout Europe Decathlon is a great option for great value ski clothing. The great thing with a ski jacket is that you can use it for other things throughout winter- whether it's walking the dog, heading out to the local pub, or simply keeping warm!
How many pairs of Salopettes should you take on a skiing holiday? Realistically you only really need to take one pair of salopettes with you. There's no need for the extra weight in your suitcase. Steer clear of white salopettes however as these tend to go a yellowish colour as the week goes on if you spend some time on the ground!
Most mid to high range hotels also offer cleaning services if you desperately require it although the likelihood is low. Most people simply use the radiators in their hotel rooms to help dry their equipment for the following day.
2. Layering system
Use a layering system underneath your ski jacket and salopettes to provide additional warmth with a Thin Long Sleeve Thermal Base Layer and Micro Fleece Mid Layer beneath your jacket. Do not wear cotton layers as these will soak up with sweat and feel damp and uncomfortable during the day.
Long Johns may not look brilliant; however they do a great job in keeping your legs warm on the coldest of days.
A Micro Fleece Mid Layer should not feel bulky under your ski jacket and will provide extra warmth and layering for the coldest of days. On warmer days it can be removed for extra comfort.
- Long Sleeve Thermal Base Layer
- Thermal Long Johns
- Micro Fleece Mid Layer
3. Ski Socks
You only need to wear one pair of Ski Socks. A mid weight pair will be ideal. These are to be worn over your long johns. Wearing more than one pair at once will likely cause blisters.
Ideally take two pairs to switch between. If you're worried about odours you can have one pair on the go while a second pair is drying back at your accomodation.
- Ski Socks
For your first ski holiday you do not need to buy ski boots and skis. Hire can be arranged for a reasonable price in Bulgaria and some operators offer special 'all inclusive' packages including ski and boot hire, ski tuition and lift passes which helps to save money on your holiday.
Thin silk liner gloves are a greeat way to add extra hand warmth.
4. Waterproof Ski Gloves
A good pair of specific Waterproof Ski Gloves is essential. Cold fingers are extremely uncomfortable while skiing. Make sure they have a waterproof membrane. Decathlon sell some great quality skiing gloves that you can usually purchase for less than £10 however aim for quality.
If you really feel the cold in your extremities- you can also purchase a pair of Ultra Thin Liner Gloves that will give your fingers extra warmth.
· Waterproof Ski Gloves
· Silk Liner Gloves (if you really feel the cold)
5. Headwear
You need to ensure your neck, face and head are protected while skiing
A Warm Hat will stop heat loss through your head. A beanie style hat is ideal. Most people have one of these already at home.
A Neckwamer/ Buff is ideal to protect your neck
Ski Goggles are ideal for those days where visibility is poor. Due to the pure whiteness of snow conditions you must protect your eyes.
A specific Ski Helmet is a recommendation for children
