Pavlov's Dogs and Hunger

You may have heard of Pavlov, hunger and his Dogs. Over a period of time he was able to replace food with a trigger which caused the dogs to salivate as if seeing food in front of them ready to eat.

Over time humans have also been subject to this effect. Just a light smell of something a dieter craves such as bacon, or fresh bread, may can lead to heightened activity in area of the brain. The amygdala and the orbitofrontal cortex form part of the brain's reward circuitry and pick up this stimulus. This effect can even be the same for a picture of a food or a small taste as sometimes a little sugar or just seeing that slice of cake in a shop window can cause a huge craving.

Increased appetite and thurst. Drinking water and weight loss

Did you know that your brain struggles to tell the difference between whether you're feeling hungry or simply dehydrated and in need of water? Your hypothalamus in your brain is responsible for maintaining the body's homeostasis. It struggles to decipher between hunger and thirst so the initial thing you should do when feeling hungry is Drink A Glass Of Water.

Increased water consumption can assist in weight loss particularly if you drink a glass of water prior to a meal. Drinking water prior to a meal can help with weight loss as it gives the drinker a feeling of a fuller stomach and therefore has the potential to limit the food intake of a dieter. Diet sodas can have a similar effect however make sure you limit how many you drink as the artificial sweetners and products many contain can be detrimental to your long term health.

How much water should you drink each day?

How much water or fluid do you drink each day that isn't caffeinated like Coca-Cola, coffee or tea? • Eat a balanced diet to get all the nutrients which you require to stay healthy while dieting

  • Set realistic weight loss goals
  • Restrict intake of saturated and hydrogenated fats
  • Eat more fibre.
